'In 2005-2006, I felt the need to join the school board. It was controversial at the time, as I was running against the incumbent and two other members from the community. The district was forced to raise taxes due to a large settlement with a utility company. The taxpayers were being hit the hardest and wanted the schools to dial it back. It was a tough situation where you had a community struggling on one side and students' futures on the other. I wanted to help the community, which encapsulated two townships, without interrupting the district's strive to provide an excellent education for approximately 8,000 students, including three of my own.’

'I have served for 18 years, beginning my 7th term this year. One of the most rewarding aspects has been helping the district consolidate buildings and property for sustainable funding. This process took years and required cutting through the fear of change. I am proud to work with such an outstanding superintendent's cabinet, staff, and other board members.'

'In two words: problem solving. Since I was 12, I’ve worked on making improvements with my hands and creativity. I enjoy helping family, friends, and even new acquaintances take steps to do the same. While raising three sons, I’ve kept humor at the forefront. I also enjoy working with the church, restoring my historical home, helping on three other boards, firefighting, real estate, and, in recent years, making my own red wine. What could be more rewarding?'
