Meet the Board: Peggy Zugibe

This week, meet Peggy Zugibe, the dedicated and passionate President of our School Board who has spent over 30 years serving the district and making a lasting impact on the future of our students. Here’s a closer look at what motivates her:

‘I wanted to run for the school board because I was active in the PTA.  I had volunteered to serve on several district committees and I realized that I could better serve all of the students in our district and the school community at large if I was a school board member.  In my opinion, school boards represent grassroots democracy.  We don’t run with party affiliations and our constituents vote us into our positions and they also vote on our budget. Therefore I think it keeps our focus on our mission of providing our students with an excellent academic opportunity while keeping taxes affordable for our community.’

'I have been on the board for over 30 years and over my tenure I have learned to adapt and change with the times.  I think my experience has taught me how to deal with state and federal representatives so that I can better advocate for our students and our community.  One of the most rewarding aspects of my time in this role was helping the district navigate our way out of the Mirant debt crisis.  Although we are still making payments until 2036 I was part of a board that wanted to make sure that our students were minimally impacted by the financial crisis.  Thanks to the support of our community and our employees we were able to keep programs in place that kept our students competitive.'

'I thank my family for allowing me to spend so much time on school board service, especially in recent years when I have been on the New York State School Boards Association Board of Directors and served as its President.  I am currently the immediate past president.  So when I have free time I enjoy spending time with my family, my husband, my children and especially my 5 grandchildren who all attend NR schools.  I also enjoy teaching third grade religious education classes to students at St. Peter’s Church.  Children and volunteering are my passio’
